EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were central to campaigns to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
